About the event

All healthcare professionals and aged care workers play an important role in helping people plan for the end of life. But how do you approach these challenging conversations with patients and their families? There is no one-size-fits-all approach, and finding the right way to communicate can be challenging.

If you want to build confidence and develop practical skills for having these important conversations, this webinar is for you!

This Advance Care Planning Week (17–23 March), we’ve teamed up with our friends at Advance Care Planning Australia to bring you this session. Together, we’ll take a deep dive into advance care planning, including:
  • The principles underpinning contemporary advance care planning.
  • Best practice communication strategies to initiate an advance care planning discussion.
  • Using inclusive communication approaches which are sensitive to diverse situations and responses.
  • Where to get information and resources to support your ongoing learning and practice.
Talking about death can be tough, but with the right tools and approach, you can have effective and more meaningful conversation with the people in your care. We will be guided by the expertise of:
  • Nicola Champion – consumer representative, a strong advocate for palliative care and a registered nurse with twenty years’ experience working in a rural, regional community cancer care and palliative services. Read Nicola’s Story.
  • Kylie Ash – Advance Care Planning Australia, Education Coordinator. Kylie is also a registered nurse with a Master of Nursing. Her clinical grounding in cancer and hematological settings forged her passion for holistic, person-led care.  In her current role, she is driven to deliver engaging and innovative learning to care providers and the community.
  • Dr Catherine Joyce BA(Hons), M Psych, GCHE, PhD - Catherine Joyce is the National Manger, Advance Care Planning Australia. She has a background in health services research, and senior management roles in health, aged care, community services, and government.
