Caroline’s End of Life Conversation

During my career as a palliative care nurse I was privileged to share many meaningful end of life conversations with my patients. These memorable moments—full of vulnerability, courage, and human connection—have inspired me and this artwork.

Over my lifetime I have built up a strong connection to the Kimberley region of Western Australia which has also helped to shape this painting.

It’s harsh, beautiful landscape symbolising the emotional and spiritual challenges of life’s final journey. A sunset—marks the end of life—while seven boab trees represent spirituality, birth and rebirth.

The two central trees convey compassion and interconnectedness, reflecting the deep support found in final moments.

Diverging paths, one solid and straightforward, the other winds towards the glowing horizon. Along this second path a solitary boab stands acting as a gatekeeper—marking the transition into the unknown.

This piece is ultimately about light, peace and hope. It is a visual conversation about the journey we all must one day take—and the beauty and meaning that can be found within.
