This painting took inspiration from my previous work as a registered nurse at a nursing home in Melbourne. I cared for elderly blind men at the end stages of their lives. My work involved the physical and emotional care of these men; feeding, toileting, medicating, turning and talking. These people lose their ability to care for themselves due to deterioration in their cognitive and physical state. They are vulnerable and this process sometimes go unnoticed by the people who haven't had personal experience seeing a loved one die. I found it a great privilege to work with these residents from day to day, getting to know them well and hopefully giving them some dignity and comfort at the end of their lives. There can be a lovely mystery and beauty at this stage of life.
