Artwork Description
Using my own profile, I have re-imagined the aging process informed by my experience of last stage of life of close family members. The profile is in shadow surrounded by an array of painted cardboard jigsaw pieces symbolizing the many parts of our lives that no longer fit neatly together when nearing the end-of-life. Some pieces of our life’s puzzle are lost, other memories become more vivid or a complete puzzle. Both the past and present, the colourful and the challenging, appear to float around at will.
This work honours the reality of our existence at all stages of our life cycle. In this instance, I am both the protagonist and the observer / partner becoming a container for the narratives of my family’s lives as they experience their presence in the world at this stage of being.
Patterns of our existence and the way in which we relate to our world is a common thread throughout my practice. The vibrant colour, an integral part of my visual language, reflects the heightened ‘colour’ and drama of their lives.
