Artwork Description
Earlier this year, my father was unexpectedly placed in palliative care and passed away on my 40th birthday. I was unwell and unable to travel to be with him. In the quiet aftermath, I created this piece as a way to process grief and reflect on my own slow unravelling and reweaving.
This layered textile artwork was made by pulling and threading various wool fibres through linen. The repetitive, meditative motions brought calm and peace to my mind and allowed space to process and heal.
This piece represents new beginnings. Some fibres have been repurposed, like the chunky pink wool, which was once a throw blanket. Just as in life, these materials are reborn into a new existence, continuing beyond what they once were. The subtle floral suggestions evoke renewal and growth that comes with a new season. A new life or chapter, not just for those who have passed, but for those left behind. The softness of the textures reflects the tenderness and care found in palliative settings as well as the warmth and serenity we offer one another at the end.
